LakeLine 29-2: Algal Toxins

Description

In this issue, we again address toxic algae. This was the theme of the Summer 2006 issue of LakeLine and since that time, an
informal group of NALMS members has met at each annual Symposium to discuss all things related to toxic algae. There have been significant changes since 2006 in analytical procedures, policies, and knowledge of the distribution, concentration, and environmental effects of toxigenic cyanobacteria. We thought it was appropriate to devote another LakeLine issue to this important topic. As you’ll see in this issue, some states have taken the threat of toxic algae very seriously and have instituted comprehensive monitoring protocols and health guidelines. Other states have not been as aggressive. It is our hope that sound, sensible information about monitoring, policies, and findings from states and regions with active programs will inform and inspire similar efforts throughout North America.
